Positive first day in Sachsenring for Pedrosa and Marquez
Repsol Honda riders Dani Pedrosa and Marc Marquez have enjoyed a productive first day at the GP of Germany. Track conditions weren't very good in this morning's cold FP1 session - only 15ºC with a track temperature of 21ºC, both Dani and Marc opted to use the soft compound front and rear Bridgestone tyres. On his last exit, Marc used a hard front tyre and improved his time slightly.
In the afternoon the sun appeared and the ambient temperature rose to 21ºC and the track to 37ºC, and both riders chose to run the whole session with the hard front tyre. Dani spent some laps with the hard rear tyre but unsurprisingly posted his fastest time on the soft option with 1'22.239 on his final lap of 25. Marc, visiting Sachsenring for the first time on a MotoGP machine, remained on the soft rear for the whole session and was just 0.012 off Dani with 1'22.251 on lap 19 of 23.

"Today we focused on tyres, in order to find out what the ideal choice will be for Sunday's race and lately we have had some problems with the compounds being a little harder than normal. I had time to test all the options and in general things went well. However, tomorrow we have to find a slightly better setup for cornering. "The day has been very positive and I'm very happy with how practice has gone so far, as I have been slowly improving. From the start I felt very comfortable - with it being a smaller circuit, the speed isn't so different compared to when you're riding a Moto2 bike. Of course, you reach your braking markers quicker and you have to use new references, but it isn't that different to other circuits. This helps me to adapt a little more quickly. We have been working hard, but there are still some places on the track where I have to improve, be more consistent and find a good setup. Tomorrow we will try to continue in the same way, just as focused. I am sorry to see Jorge suffer another big crash, we wait to hear news and I send him my best wishes"
Red Bull KTM Ajo rider takes second fastest time overall and puts in strong pace on day one of German GP. Zulfahmi Khairuddin and Arthur Sissis finish day satisfied, in eleventh and seventeenth, respectively.
The story of the last three Grands Prix was repeated this Friday in the opening session. Under a cloudy sky, Luis Salom began strong in Germany. He took the best time of the session with a new circuit record of 1:28.069 –also putting together a run of five laps in the 1:28s. Arthur Sissis was seventh in the morning with a time of 1:28.886, in an excellent showing at a track not amongst his favourites. Zulfahmi Khairuddin placed twenty-second in the morning, dedicating his first 40 minute runout to testing parts for his KTM.
The experiment paid off and the Malaysian improved his best lap by over a second in the afternoon, taking the eleventh best time. Arthur Sissis was fifteenth (seventeenth overall) after clocking a 1:28.861 lap, whilst Salom was second quickest with a 1:27.588 lap. The Spanish rider also put in four consecutive laps under the 1:28 mark.
After a final free practice session tomorrow, qualifying will take place at 12:35pm, local time.

Just a few minutes from the end of FP2, Andrea Iannone clocked his best time of 1:23.008, less than a second from first-place Stefan Bradl, after he himself was a victim of a spectacular fall just after the start of FP1. The incident took place in the fast turn eleven, where the Italian’s bike tumbled before coming to a stop in the gravel.
This is Iannone’s first race aboard the ‘lab’ version of the Desmosedici GP13, which the Energy T.I. Pramac Racing Team worked hard to repair during the break between the two sessions.

“This morning was quite difficult, as I fell when I didn’t expect it. It’s not an easy circuit with the tyres, as there are many consecutive left-hand corners and then a very fast right, after the right side of the tyre has cooled. Anyway, I tried to stay calm and confident this afternoon; I started to push pretty early, and I saw some results. I’m pleased because I immediately felt the changes we made to the bike today, which is quite positive. Now we’ll see what else we can do for tomorrow, but it will certainly be important to be able to repeat the time I did today and then improve upon it. A big thank-you to the team for the great work they did to get the bike ready for the second free practice.”
It was an unsatisfying day for Michele Pirro. Just as the Italian was regaining a good feeling with his bike, he suffered a fall after changing a tyre a few minutes from the end of FP2. This ruined his efforts to further reduce his gap to the top ten, who were all within a second of one another.
Inside the Ignite Pramac Racing Team garage, work continues to find a more consistent grip throughout the duration of the race, as well as better stability on the relatively bumpy circuit.

The bike this afternoon was not bad, I had a good feeling, and I immediately saw a few improvements in my time compared to this morning. I started with used tyres, and, seven minutes before the end of the session we put in the new ones. I returned to the track but on my first lap I crashed at the second left-hand turn without being able to take advantage of the new rubber, and I'm really disappointed about that. It seems in any case that we are all more or less aligned on times. However, compared to the morning session, we made a big improvement and we hope to do even better tomorrow.”

Toni Finsterbusch trotz Ausrutscher guter Dinge
Der erste Trainingstag beim Großen Preis von Deutschland für Motorräder auf dem Sachsenring verlief für Kiefer Racing und seine beiden Fahrer Toni Finsterbusch und Florian Alt soweit ganz gut. Während Toni schon am Vormittag eine gute Zeit fuhr, am Nachmittag in den Top Ten liegend stürzte und dann zurückgereicht wurde, konnte Florian seine schnelle Zeit erst im zweiten Training realisieren. Nach dem ersten Tag steht Toni Finsterbusch auf dem 27. und Florian auf dem 31. Platz.
Dass Toni auf dem heimischen Sachsenring gut zurecht kommt zeigte er gleich im ersten Training. Da konnte er sich gleich in den von ihm geplanten Top 20 platzieren. Am Nachmittag legte er dann noch ein paar Briketts drauf und lag zur Zeit seines Sturzes auf dem 10 Rang. Leider wurde dabei sein Motorrad so stark beschädigt, dass ein weiterfahren nicht mehr möglich war. Er selbst kam glimpflich davon und holte sich ausser Schürfwunden am Bein und an der Hand keine weiteren Blessuren. Die Folge des Missgeschicks war natürlich, dass er in der Ergebnisliste nach hinten durchgereicht wurde.
Bei Florian nahm man für dieses Rennen ein paar Änderungen am Fahrwerk vor, womit er gleich am Morgen mehr zutrauen zu seinem Motorrad fand. Das Zutrauen zum Motorrad schlug sich aber erst am Nachmittag in einer schnelleren Zeit nieder. Hier fuhr er im Gegensatz zum ersten Training über zwei Sekunden schneller. In der Ergebnisliste verringerte er den Rückstand auf nur 2,5 Sekunden, wobei man erwähnen kann, dass bis zur dritten Position lediglich 1,5 Sekunden "fehlen".
Toni Finsterbusch, 27. Platz in 1:29.499 min.:
"Im zweiten Training kam ich sofort gut in den Rhythmus und fuhr auch gleich eine schnelle Zeit. in der dritten Runde der Session, als sich in einer Kurve ein "Highsider" ankündigte, konnte ich ihn nicht mehr abfangen und bin gestürzt. Dabei brach der Lenkerstummel ab und leider konnte ich nicht mehr weiterfahren. Trotzdem denke ich, dass wir von der Spitze nicht so weit entfernt sind und wenn ich morgen etwas länger fahren kann, ist da auch sicher noch was drin."
Florian Alt, 31. Platz in 1:31.933 min.:
"Wir kommen immer näher ran. Jetzt sind es noch 11/10 Sekunden bis auf die ersten Zehn also es ist hier nicht so schlecht. Ich bekomme langsam auch wieder das Gefühl, welches ich mit dem Motorrad brauche. Jetzt kann ich wieder die Linie so fahren und halten wie es normal ist und es kommen auch wieder die üblichen Schwierigkeiten die alle haben. Nicht eben dieses Grundproblem, dass gar nichts geht. nach der Änderung im Fahrwerk habe ich ganz normale Probleme wie chattering oder ähnliches. Lustigerweise bin ich momentan "froh" darüber, dass ich solche Probleme wie chattering habe. Morgen müssen wir noch eine halbe Sekunde zulegen und dann wird alles gut."
Stefan Kiefer, Teammanager:
"Toni ist leider gestürzt, das ist sehr schade. Bis dahin war er sehr schnell unterwegs und auch die Runde mit dem Sturz war wieder schneller. Zum Glück ist ihm dabei nichts Schlimmes passiert. Das Gefühl für das Motorrad ist jedenfalls da und er wird morgen in der Lage sein nochmals zuzulegen. Top 20 müssten möglich sein. Mit Florian sind wir auch happy. Mit ihm sehen wir endlich etwas Land und er fühlt sich nun auch wohl auf dem Motorrad. Ich glaube da machen wir momentan den Schritt in die richtige Richtung. Das wird in den nächsten Trainings bestimmt auch noch besser. "

Schmerzmittel – und trotzdem starke Zeiten
Starker Auftakt beim Grand Prix von Deutschland auf dem Sachsenring: Team Interwetten Paddock-Star Tom Lüthi fuhr im ersten freien Training am Freitagvormittag auf den vierten Platz, steigerte sich am Nachmittag um eine weitere Zehntelsekunde und belegte im zweiten freien Training ebenso wie in der Tages-Gesamtwertung den achten Platz. Neben seinen guten Rundenzeiten war dabei vor allem Lüthis Fitness bemerkenswert: Über Monate hinweg hatte der 125 ccm-Weltmeister von 2005 an den Folgen einer komplizierten, bei einem Test-Unfall im Februar erlittenen Verletzung des rechten Oberarms laboriert, hatte über die letzten Wochen hinweg aber immer deutlicher sichtbare Heilungsfortschritte gemacht. Trotz der hohen körperlichen Beanspruchung auf dem kurvenreichen und über Berg und Tal führenden Sachsenring konnte Lüthi nun erstmals ohne Schmerzmittel an den Start gehen. Trotzdem verlor der 26jährige aus Oberdiessbach/Schweiz nur weniger als vier Z ehntelsekunden auf die Bestzeit des Briten Scott Redding und wäre womöglich sogar noch schneller gewesen, wenn er in seiner letzten fliegenden Runde nicht von einem kleinen technischen Missgeschick aufgehalten worden wäre: An seinem Triebwerk sprang der sechste Gang heraus, ein Problem, dem die für die Betreuung des der Moto2-Einheitsmotoren zuständigen Techniker der Firma ExternPro am Freitagnachmittag auf die Spur zu kommen versuchten.
Tom Lüthi – Platz 8 in 1.25,541 min.:
Ich bin sehr zufrieden mit dem Tag. Ich bin das erste Mal seit meinem Comeback ohne Spritzen gefahren, und das ging eigentlich sehr gut. Auch mit unseren Rundenzeiten bin ich soweit zufrieden, denn obwohl ich nur Achter bin, geht es sehr eng zu, mit nur wenigen Zehntelsekunden Rückstand zur Spitze. Der Sachsenring ist kurz, das schiebt die Abstände sehr zusammen. Für die Qualifikation morgen mache ich mir keine Sorgen. Wir haben uns noch ein bisschen was aufgespart, haben noch Verbesserungspotenzial und wissen genau, wo wir bei der Abstimmung des Motorrads ansetzen müssen. Ich denke wirklich, dass wir noch zulegen können, auch weil ich meine letzte fliegende Runde heute abbrechen musste. Wir hatten ein Problem mit dem Getriebe, eingangs der letzten Runde ist mir der sechste Gang wieder rausgesprungen, als ich Takahashi überholen wollte. Damit war die Runde gelaufen!

An eventful day of track action came to a close at the Sachsenring on the first day of the eni Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland with local favourite Stefan Bradl topping the timesheets for LCR Honda MotoGP. Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo suffered another heavy accident in the afternoon session, landing on his injured shoulder, unfortunately putting him out of the Germany race and possibly the next.
Bradl’s Friday-topping lap time came in the form of a 1’22.030, with Lorenzo ending the day second overall from Repsol Honda Team’s Dani Pedrosa and their respective teammates Valentino Rossi and Marc Marquez. Completing the top eight were Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Cal Crutchlow, Ducati Team’s Nicky Hayden - who experienced a late crash at Turn 3, which followed a pair of earlier off-track moments - and Power Electronics Aspar’s Aleix Espargaro, the leading CRT runner.
The most significant happening of the day came just oven ten minutes into the afternoon session. Having broken his left collarbone at Assen only 15 days earlier, Lorenzo lost control exiting Turn 10 and landed heavily on his already damaged shoulder. The session was briefly stopped as the stricken Yamaha M1 was lying in the middle of Turn 11, while the World Champion was checked over.
Only three and a half minutes after the restart, Crutchlow suffered his second crash of the day – and both had come at the rapid Turn 11. When he was sliding down the track, several pieces of gravel became trapped inside his right glove, which had to be removed by the medical staff at the Clinica Mobile and the wounds cleaned up. He has been declared fit to ride tomorrow. In the morning, Ducati Team’s Andrea Dovizioso and Energy T.I. Pramac Racing’s Andrea Iannone had gone down at the same corner. For Dovizioso the crash meant that he wrote off his only GP13 “Evolution” chassis, having to revert back to the regular GP13 for the rest of the weekend.
Cardion AB Motoracing’s Karel Abraham was struck down with flu and fever and for that reason did not take part in the afternoon period, whereas Hiroshi Aoyama was back in action with Avintia Blusens for the first time since his hand-injuring crash on the Saturday of the Catalan Grand Prix. In Practice 2, GO&FUN Honda Gresini’s Bryan Staring added his name to the list of fallers.
Redding reduced the quickest time of the day to 1’25.152, leading De Angelis by just over one tenth of a second ahead of the San Marino rider’s MotoGP™ class outing at Laguna Seca next weekend. Espargaro and Came IodaRacing Project’s Johann Zarco also ended the day within two tenths of a second of the leader, with Mika Kallio next up to ensure Marc VDS riders are bookending the top five.
Desguaces La Torre Maptaq’s Xavier Simeon made a good start to his weekend by putting his Kalex in sixth, ahead of Technomag carXpert’s Randy Krummenacher and Interwetten-Paddock’s Tom Luthi. Italtrans Racing Team’s Julian Simon will be pleased to have put his bike in ninth, while NGM’s Simone Corsi will hope to claw back some positions on his teammate in second.
Simon’s teammate, Takaaki Nakagami ended the day in 14th, after getting on his bike for the first time since breaking his collarbone in Assen. He stated that he was not in pain or discomfort, and put his result purely down to set-up issues.
With Maverick Viñales’ leading Sachsenring lap of last season having been 1’28.159, Rins established the overall best lap of Friday by posting 1’27.208. This was a full three tenths of a second quicker than championship leader Salom, who had topped the opening session in the morning. Behind Vazquez, who recovered from a fall to finish third, the top five was completed by Ongetta-Centro Seta’s Isaac Viñales and Team Calvo’s younger cousin Maverick.
Niklas Ajo was further down the order than is usually the case, ending the day in 30th place after sustaining a small fracture to his right wrist in a morning crash. Further fallers in the afternoon period were Kiefer Racing’s Toni Finsterbusch, Redox RW Racing GP’s Jakub Kornfeil and Ongetta-Centro Seta’s Matteo Ferrari, while San Carlo Team Italia’s Romano Fenati was forced to stop with a broken chain.
